Mark Bowden has over 25 years of experience designing data solutions for businesses (primarily banking), from strategy and architecture to technical implementation, data modelling and data engineering.
He has led the development of the data & systems strategy and architecture for the commercial banking division of a major UK bank, including 5-year operating plans and budgets. Following on from this he was responsible for the delivery of the Data Systems workstream with an investment budget of £300m+ over 3 years. In a subsequent role, he led a team of 270 FTE across 13 UK and 3 international sites responsible for the end to end development of data, analytics, regulatory reporting and risk management platforms supporting over 10,000 users globally. In this role his team was responsible for strategy, business architecture, data architecture, design, development, testing and support of 26 platforms and for data governance, lineage and quality on those systems including the implementation of GDPR. In these roles, he has been involved in the leadership of work under Basel 2, BCBS239, IFRS7 and numerous other regulatory change programmes.
As a technical practitioner as well as a leader, he also has hands-on experience with both developing big data systems (Azure Data Engineer certified) and in using data – through his early career as a risk modeller and data scientist, where he pioneered the use of machine learning in credit risk management systems in UK banking.
